Introduction

Eleanor Cross Healthcare is a dual-site GP practice with just over 19,000 registered patients in and around Northampton.

Eleanor Cross were previously using Doctorlink as their online consultation provider; Doctorlink was decommissioned across the NHS in December 2022. We first met the Eleanor Cross practice manager Mark at an autumn conference, where the team had visited other suppliers’ stands, but agreed Anima “by far stood out as the one to suit our needs”.

Implementation

Eleanor Cross’ Anima account manager worked with the practice team and the local Commissioning Support Unit (CSU) on technical setup for deploying Anima, and liaised with the ICS to secure a seamless transition of funding from the practice’s prior Doctorlink contract to Anima.

Practice training for ~70 practice staff was conducted over 2 weeks in November 2022 ahead of launching in December 2022.

Key outcomes post-launch

  • Average number of requests resolved per week: 900

  • Time for 40-50 new appointments each day—a whole afternoon clinic, equivalent 1-2 FTE

  • 66% decrease in frontline clinical staff required for managing requests

  • Average weekly requests submitted:‍

    • Pre-Anima: ~350 (May 2022)

    • Post-Anima: ~1,000 (January 2023)

  • Average time to resolve patient request:

    • Pre-Anima: 72 hours

    • Post-Anima: < 24 hours

  • Staff required to manage patient requests:

    • Pre-Anima: 3

    • Post-Anima: 1
